Prom Flower Tips: How to Choose the Perfect Corsage or Boutonniere
Prom season is here, and your flowers should be just as amazing as your outfit. Whether you’re going classic, bold, whimsical, or full-on glam, here are some tips to help you pick the perfect corsage or boutonniere.
Don’t Be Afraid of Color
Color makes everything pop — especially in photos.
If your date is wearing black, go bright and vibrant.
If your date is in pink, try a mixed corsage with different textures and tones to help it stand out.
Want something fun? Add wire, feathers, or natural elements for a whimsical vibe.
What Flowers Go With Which Dress Color?
Black Dress
Pretty much anything goes! From soft pastels to bright, bold, high-contrast colors.
Sea Foam Dress
Creams, soft pinks, peaches, and lavender complement beautifully.
Red + Silver Dress
White roses tipped with silver glitter, or red + white flowers with hints of sparkle.
Gray or Nude Dress
Peach, yellow, pink, and lavender all work well and add warmth.
Royal Blue Dress
Shades of blue, white, lavender, or even yellows and greens.
For a moodier, vintage look: deep reds, purples, and blues.
White Dress
The easiest match! Whites, greens, pastels, or bright statement colors — anything goes.
✨ Trendy Prom Corsages
Add wire, bling, or a beaded bracelet for a more customized and modern look.
When to Order
If you want something special, give your florist time.
Once you have your dress or tux sorted out, your next stop should be your florist.
Bring:
A fabric swatch OR
A paint chip sample close to your color
(We have a painter’s color wheel with thousands of shades, so we can match almost anything!)
Size + Fit Matter
A corsage for someone 6 ft tall will look different than one for someone 5 ft tall.
That’s why we ask about height and build — it helps us design something well-balanced and comfortable.
Sending Photos Helps
Emailing photos of your dress helps us get a sense of your style and the vibe you want.
Prom Shopping Tip
As much as we adore your parents… it’s totally fine to come choose your prom flowers without them. Too many opinions can distract from your own vision.
Not Into Wearing a Corsage?
A pretty hand-tied bouquet is becoming more popular and costs about the same.
Boutonniere Tips
Boys’ boutonnieres have come a long way! Skip the baby’s breath and switch things up with:
Orchids
Mini calla lilies
Billy balls
Hypericum berries
Wire or ribbon accents
Twine-wrapped stems for a rustic look
Pinning Tip:
Flowers grow up — point the bloom upward and the stem down.
Cross the pins in an “X” from the inside of the lapel for better hold.
Pick-Up + Care
Keep flowers in the refrigerator, never the freezer or a hot car.
Take them out right before you head to prom so they stay fresh and gorgeous.
